The New York Mets have found their new manager.
Local media outlets such as ‘ESPN’ reported on the 7th (Korean time) that the Mets have chosen Carlos Mendoza (43), the bench coach of the New York Yankees, as their new manager.
Mendoza, originally from Venezuela, played 13 seasons in the minor leagues and independent leagues as an infielder during his active career.
He began his coaching career in 2009 as a minor league coach for the Yankees. Since then, he has held various positions and joined the major league coaching staff after the 2017 season.
In November 2019, he succeeded Josh Bard as the team’s bench coach and has held this position until this season.
His extensive on-the-ground experience gained through a long coaching career made him a prime candidate for the next manager, and he eventually got the opportunity to manage the Mets, a rival team from the same region.
He was also mentioned as a strong candidate for manager at the San Diego Padres besides the Mets.
The Mets have had four managers over the past six seasons since 2018. Mickey Callaway, Luis Rojas, and Buck Showalter all failed to last more than two seasons.
Carlos Beltran, due to his involvement in the sign scandal of the Houston Astros during his active career, stepped down from his managerial position without even playing an official game.
During this period, the Mets only made it to the postseason once. Despite high expectations due to aggressive investments last season, they only managed to secure 75 wins.
Meanwhile, Craig Counsell, who was strongly mentioned as a candidate for the Mets manager, is soon to decide his future.
Both the Mets and Cleveland, where he was mentioned as a strong candidate, have chosen other individuals as their managers.
