[iNews24 reporter Min Hye-jeong] Son Kyung-sik, the chairman of the Korea Federation of Business Associations, discussed Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) regional economic cooperation and sustainable growth measures during a conversation with APEC leaders.
The Federation announced on the 17th that Chairman Son visited San Francisco, USA as a Korean representative of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) from the 15th to the 17th. On the 16th (local time), Chairman Son exchanged opinions on issues such as sustainable growth in the Asia-Pacific region, carbon neutrality, with the leaders of Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Brunei at the “Conversation with APEC Leaders” event.
APEC is the largest economic cooperation body in the Asia-Pacific region, accounting for half of the world’s trade volume. Every year, the leaders of 21 member countries in the Asia-Pacific region gather to discuss key global agendas such as economy and security. President Yoon Suk-yeol, as well as leaders from major countries such as the US, Japan, and China, attended this APEC summit.
ABAC, the APEC Business Advisory Council, is a private advisory body established during the APEC Manila Summit in 1996 through the agreement reached at the APEC Osaka Summit in 1995. During the APEC summit, ABAC conveys suggestions from businesses in the region through conversations with APEC leaders. It holds four meetings per year.
A representative of the Federation stated, “Chairman Son met with high-ranking officials from major countries such as Nakaso Hiroshi, former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan (currently Director of the Daiwa Institute of Research), Kokubo Fumiya Marubeni Chairman, and Matt Murray, the US APEC Ambassador,” and said, “He requested support and attention for the successful hosting of the 2030 Busan Expo and the APEC summit in 2025, where Korea will be the host country.”
