Nevera
How fast have you ever driven in reverse? Due to the nature of reverse gears, it’s not usually very fast. However, there’s been recent buzz about a car manufacturer that achieved a speed of 170.88 mph (275 km) in reverse.
Driving in reverse at over 124.27 mph, one might wonder in what situation would this be necessary? Is there actually a car that can do this? Until recently, the answer was no, but now there’s one: the Rimac Nevera.

The history of Bugatti is somewhat complex. The Bugatti brand refers to luxury sports cars created by French car designer Ettore Bugatti. In 1998, the Volkswagen Group acquired the Bugatti automobile division, and since then, the Bugatti brand has remained part of the Volkswagen Group.
In 2021, the electric supercar manufacturer Rimac acquired Bugatti, a hypercar brand under Volkswagen. The trend of electrification is blowing strong in the traditional supercar industry.
Rimac Automobili, based in Croatia, is an electric car manufacturer equipped with strong electric powertrain technology and electric car tuning capabilities.
The Nevera, a 2,000 horsepower electric hypercar produced in Croatia, has set various speed records earlier this year.
▷ It reaches 100 mph in 3.1 seconds
▷ From a standstill, it can reach 200 mph in under 11 seconds. Top speed: 255.89 mph
So, what about its reverse speed? The top reverse speed is 171.27 mph. This is slightly faster than the 169.94 mph that the Lamborghini Miura managed in 1967.
Why would they create a hypercar with such an astonishing reverse speed?
The reason for creating the fastest car in reverse
Matija Reni ċ, the lead program engineer of Nevera, said, “During development, we thought that Nevera might be the fastest reversing car in the world, but at first, we laughed it off. Aerodynamics, cooling, and stability were not designed to go fast in reverse.”
He added, “But then, we started talking about how fun it would be to try it. The simulations showed that we could achieve speeds well beyond 150 mph.”
He also said, “We didn’t have many ideas about how stable it would be because we were entering uncharted territory.”
In other words, what started as fun resulted in the fastest car in the world. It is handcrafted and limited to 150 units, priced at $2.4 million (approximately 32 billion won).
Sometimes, even seemingly useless performance can prove to be of great value. The news of Nevera’s high-speed reverse has opened up the possibility of electric cars moving in new directions. It’s exciting to see how this performance will be utilized in the future.
