President Yoon Seok-yeol took an active ‘Korea Sales’ approach at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. He urged APEC to take the lead in overcoming the climate crisis and simultaneously threw the topic of ‘carbon-free energy utilization expansion,’ focusing on areas where Korean companies boast world-class knowledge and experience. He also pursued defense sales and securing key minerals through meetings with resource-rich countries.
On the 16th (local time) at the APEC summit held in San Francisco, USA, President Yoon stated during the first day’s meeting (1st session), “I want to promote the transition to a clean energy system together with APEC member countries” and “I will lead the expansion of carbon-free energy utilization.” In particular, President Yoon proposed, “Let’s establish and promote a special initiative to spread smart mobility across APEC member countries.”
President Yoon introduced, “Along with the expansion of clean energy use, the transition to eco-friendly transportation is the most contributory solution to climate change response,” and “Korea is actively promoting the spread of eco-friendly cars, autonomous driving cars, and intelligent transportation systems such as smart mobility.” He also proposed carbon neutrality in the shipbuilding sector. Korea’s shipbuilding industry boasts world-class technology in next-generation low-carbon ships such as LNG ships. President Yoon emphasized, “To realize carbon neutrality on the sea, we must continuously build green shipping routes,” and “Through eco-friendly shipping solutions, we will densely connect green ports in various regions of the Asia-Pacific region, including Korea and the United States.” Kim Tae-hyo, the first chief of the National Security Office, explained, “We expect to help our economy by expanding overseas opportunities for our companies while sharing our knowledge and experience in smart mobility with APEC member countries.”

President Yoon also sought to secure key minerals through bilateral meetings with resource-rich countries on the occasion of APEC. He stated to Chilean President Gabriel Boric, “Korea, as a powerhouse in secondary batteries, hopes to build a key mineral partnership with Chile, the world’s largest lithium holder.” Chile has the largest lithium reserves in the world. It is the second-largest importer of lithium to Korea after China. In addition, they agreed to deepen cooperation on global issues such as climate change by continuing to negotiate improvements to the Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is celebrating its 20th anniversary of signing.
In a meeting with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, he made defense sales. The two countries are celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, with Peru scheduled to host the APEC summit next year and Korea in 2025. The summit between the two countries is the first in eight years. President Yoon asked for Peru’s interest and support for our companies’ armored vehicles and FA-50 (light combat aircraft), which have proven their excellence, as he knows that the Peruvian government is pushing for the introduction of wheeled armored vehicles and new fighter jets. President Yoon expressed his hope to further expand mineral cooperation with Peru, which is rich in mineral resources such as copper, silver, and zinc. President Boluarte of Peru said, “I hope cooperation will be promoted in the private sector as well.”
President Yoon held a 15-minute meeting with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong, proposing to systematically promote government-business exchanges to maintain the growth momentum of trade and investment in semiconductors and automobiles. They also agreed to expand support to invigorate youth exchanges.
