‘Realizing the Camp David Principle’ 3 Major Plans… “Significant Increase in Global Joint Research Budget for Next Year”
“Digital Governance Compliant with Liberal Democracy… Strengthening Carbon Reduction and Clean Energy Cooperation”
(San Francisco = Yonhap News) Reporters An Yong-su and Jeong A-ran = On the 17th (local time), President Yoon Seok-yeol announced three solidarity strategies to realize the ‘Camp David Principle and Spirit’ in the field of science and technology among Korea, the U.S., and Japan.
Previously, President Yoon, President Joe Biden of the United States, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan each adopted the Camp David principles and spirit, which contain the continuous guidelines and vision of Korea-US-Japan cooperation, last August.
President Yoon revealed three solidarity plans in the fields of ▲ original/advanced industries ▲ AI/digital ▲ carbon reduction at the Korea-Japan Summit Roundtable held at the Hoover Research Institute at Stanford University in the U.S. on the same day.
President Yoon first said, “The three countries of Korea, the U.S., and Japan will immediately start discussions to find and promote joint projects in the field of original advanced technology.”
President Yoon said, “To this end, we plan to significantly increase the budget for global joint research next year and make a system that can respond to technological cooperation with countries that share our values at any time by flexibly executing the budget.”
President Yoon explained, “Original technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital and quantum science technology, and 6th generation mobile communication (6G) are game changers that will change the future of mankind by triggering innovation in all industries and social systems.”
He continued, “If Korea, the U.S., and Japan, which share philosophy and values, jointly develop technology and share the results, we can make the lives of not only the citizens of the three countries but also all mankind more free and abundant.”
He emphasized, “The three countries of Korea, the U.S., and Japan will strengthen cooperation in the original field, advanced field, and technology.”
President Yoon also stated, “The three countries of Korea, the U.S., and Japan need to prevent AI and digital from oppressing human freedom and ensure that human welfare is not monopolized by specific individuals.”
President Yoon pointed out, “Despite the fact that generative AI led by Chat GPT is enhancing the convenience of our lives, concerns are growing that the increasing fake news threatens democracy and freedom, or that the serious digital divide may damage human dignity.”
He emphasized, “When the three countries of Korea, the U.S., and Japan join forces to lead these international discussions, we can properly create digital governance that conforms to the values of liberal democracy.”
He also added that “the three countries of Korea, the U.S., and Japan need to work together” to ensure digital access rights for countries with insufficient digital distribution and utilization and to solve the digital divide.
President Yoon further said, “Our three countries need to actively respond to the climate crisis by strengthening cooperation in carbon reduction and clean energy technology.”
President Yoon said, “In order to bring forward the realization of carbon neutrality, we need to widely utilize high-efficiency carbon-free energy such as nuclear power and hydrogen,” and mentioned the cooperation situation between the three countries for the development of next-generation small modular reactors, which officially launched in October.
President Yoon also said, “In the field of hydrogen, policy coordination between the three countries of Korea, the U.S., and Japan is being strengthened centered on the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership,” and “I expect cooperation in clean energy between the three countries in various fields such as technology development, system, and infrastructure.”
President Yoon added, “The leaders of Korea, the U.S., and Japan declared in the Camp David Principle that the three countries are stronger when they become one,” and “I hope that you will enjoy the fruits of the new era that our three countries will open with strong solidarity and will and challenge and grow to your heart’s content.”
