[AP News = Reporter Duyeol Bae] Hyundai Motor announced on the 17th that it has entered into a comprehensive and strategic partnership with Amazon to provide customers with innovative and new experiences.
The partnership between the two companies, unveiled at the ‘2023 LA Auto Show’ held at the LA Convention Center in the U.S. on the 16th local time, includes ▲online car sales on Amazon ▲selection of Amazon Web Services as a cloud-first provider for digital innovation ▲future installation of Amazon’s artificial intelligence assistant ‘Alexa’ in new Hyundai cars, among other multi-faceted collaborations.
Firstly, Hyundai Motor and Amazon will start selling Hyundai vehicles through Amazon in the U.S. from 2024 through this business agreement.
Hyundai Motor will be the first brand that customers can purchase vehicles from on Amazon. Through the new digital shopping experience, customers can easily purchase cars from anywhere and pick up their vehicles at the dealer at their preferred time or have them delivered to their homes.
Customers can purchase a vehicle in their desired area based on various options such as model, trim, color, and features on Amazon, choose payment and financing options, and complete the entire car purchase process. Dealers can also increase their visibility and provide convenience to customers through online car sales.
In addition, Hyundai Motor has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS), which boasts the highest level of recognition in the cloud computing industry, as its cloud-first provider for overall innovation in data management, including computation, storage, management and operation, analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Hyundai Motor will transition all data operations from the current on-premises form to AWS’s cloud form, becoming a more data-centric company.
Hyundai Motor plans to primarily apply AWS to production optimization, manufacturing and supply chain management, security and disaster recovery, and connected car development. Hyundai Motor and Amazon have also established a training and certification program to educate Hyundai’s researchers on cloud technology.
Hyundai Motor plans to install Amazon’s AI assistant ‘Alexa’ in new cars launched in the U.S. from 2025.
Customers can ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, audiobooks, set reminders, modify schedules, check calendars, and more. While driving home, they can also request various smart home functions such as warming up the house, checking if the front door is locked, and controlling the lights.
Not only that, customers can ask Alexa for the latest traffic updates or weather forecasts, and control the in-car media player or navigation system with their voice. Some functions can be used even when the internet connection is unstable or unavailable.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said, “Hyundai Motor is an innovative company that can share Amazon’s passion for making customers’ lives better and easier. This partnership should play a role in everything from making it easy for customers to buy cars online, to using Alexa in cars for entertainment, shopping, smart home control, and schedule checking, to Hyundai moving data to Amazon Web Services to innovate customer experience and business operations. We look forward to developing various business models with Hyundai in the future.”
Hyundai Motor President Jaehoon Jang said, “The collaboration with Amazon, one of the most customer-centric companies in the world, is an opportunity to expand Hyundai’s business and sales network and accelerate the transition to electrification, thereby realizing the future of smart mobility.”
He continued, “Amazon is an ideal partner that can realize Hyundai’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’, which is about moving people and goods in a more efficient and sustainable way. As the first automaker to enable the entire purchasing process from vehicle selection to delivery on Amazon, this shows that Hyundai is continuously pursuing ways to enhance customer experience with Amazon.”
