Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to run in next year’s presidential election, according to multiple sources cited by major foreign media. The Russian election is scheduled for March 24 next year.
Major foreign media confirmed this information through six well-informed sources, all of whom requested anonymity due to political sensitivity, they added.
The sources reported that news of President Putin’s decision has been circulating recently, and his close aides are preparing for the election campaign and the election itself.
Furthermore, major foreign media predicted that next year’s election will be a mere formality, given that President Putin currently commands a support rate approaching 80%.
If President Putin succeeds in re-election in this election, he will retain power for another six years until 2030. Since receiving the presidency from former President Boris Yeltsin, who suddenly retired on December 31, 1999, Putin has held onto power, with the exception of four years (2008-2012) when he handed over the presidency to his confidant Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the National Security Council.
