As the death toll surpasses 10,000 in the Gaza Strip, occupied by the armed Palestinian faction Hamas, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, stating, “The Gaza Strip is becoming a graveyard for children.”

According to foreign media such as Reuters on the 6th (local time), Secretary-General Guterres said, “The Israeli Defense Forces’ (IDF) ground operations and continued bombings are raining down on civilians, hospitals, refugee camps, and UN facilities. No one is safe.”

He also addressed Hamas, saying, “At the same time, armed forces, including Hamas, are using civilians as human shields and continue to indiscriminately launch missiles at Israel,” demanding the immediate and unconditional release of hostages.

Secretary-General Guterres emphasized, “The nightmare of the Gaza Strip is more than a humanitarian crisis,” and stated, “This is a crisis for humanity,” stressing the need for a humanitarian ceasefire.

The war between Israel and Hamas has been ongoing for a month, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides.

In particular, in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has announced urban warfare, the cumulative death toll based on health authorities’ statistics is 10,022. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) posted a statement on social media X (formerly Twitter) stating, “On average, one child is dying every 10 minutes during the war, and two are injured.”

In response, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, also called for a ceasefire in a joint statement, saying, “30 days have passed. Enough is enough.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid rebutted Secretary-General Guterres’ remarks, saying, “You should be ashamed,” and criticized, “In the Gaza Strip, more than 30 minors, including infants and children who have witnessed their parents being brutally murdered, and even a 9-month-old baby, are being detained by Hamas.”
