[MyDaily = Reporter Lee Seung-gil] “It’s completely groundless.”
The production team of MBC’s ‘I Live Alone’ (hereinafter referred to as ‘I Live Alone’) has denied allegations that a hotel owned by JMS (Christian Gospel Mission) appeared on the show. The hotel also denied the allegations.
On the 5th, YouTuber Gu Je-yeok claimed in a video on his channel, “The A Hotel, which was promoted on ‘I Live Alone,’ is closely related to JMS.” In the episode of ‘I Live Alone’ that aired on the 3rd, the cast members were shown staying overnight at a hotel in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do.
Gu Je-yeok explained, “The hotel that was promoted on ‘I Live Alone’ at the level of paid product placement is a JMS company. Although it may appear unrelated to JMS on paper, most of the events and festivals organized by JMS were held at this hotel.”
He also claimed, “Room 302 of the A Hotel is the place where Jeong Myeong-seok (JMS leader) committed heinous acts against women, calling it the ‘suite room.'”
After the broadcast of ‘I Live Alone,’ the Anti-Heresy Damage Prevention Center of the Presbyterian Church of Korea sent a letter of complaint to MBC, providing evidence of the connection between JMS and the A Hotel.
According to the center, they stated, “Jeong Myeong-seok teaches that (the A Hotel) is where he received a revelation from Jesus saying, ‘I will build a villa here for you. It is what God has given.’ JMS purchased the A Hotel as a JMS accommodation to hold their own events.” They added, “(Room 302 of the A Hotel) is the place where Jeong Myeong-seok habitually committed sexual assault.”
They also mentioned, “Many victims of JMS are recalling painful memories after watching this episode.” Gu Je-yeok also shared a photo of Jeong Myeong-seok wearing a crown in the A Hotel lobby.
The controversy spread widely. On the 16th, when the controversy was reported through the media, the A Hotel stated to MyDaily, “Everything is a rumor. It has nothing to do with JMS. The production team of ‘I Live Alone’ made a reservation just like any other customer.”
The hotel also refuted the reports that they would file a lawsuit, stating, “It is a groundless story. It is not true at all.”
The stance of the ‘I Live Alone’ production team was the same. On the 17th, the production team released a short official statement, saying, “The allegations currently being raised are completely groundless. We will pay more attention and make more efforts to the various opinions sent by viewers.” The focus is now on whether this controversy will be resolved as a happening amidst the denials from both sides.
Meanwhile, Jeong Myeong-seok has been in custody and on trial since February 2018 until September 2021, facing charges of sexually assaulting two women of Hong Kong and Australian nationality at a training center in Wolmyeong-dong, Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. In August 2018, he was also accused of sexual harassment for touching a Korean woman’s thigh while driving a golf cart.
