[Herald Economy (San Francisco) = Reporter Jeong Yoon-hee] President Yoon Seok-yeol announced on the 16th (local time), “South Korea will lead the use of carbon-free energy,” and proposed, “We will establish and implement a special initiative at the APEC level to spread smart mobility across member countries in the region.”
President Yoon said at the first session of the APEC summit held in San Francisco, USA, on the same day, “The climate crisis is the most urgent task to overcome to create a sustainable future.”
He added, “To overcome the climate crisis, the role and responsibility of APEC, which accounts for about 60% of the world’s GDP, is very important,” and “South Korea intends to promote the transition to a clean energy system with APEC member countries.”

President Yoon mentioned his proposal to form a ‘Carbon Free Alliance’ for the expansion of carbon-free energy use at the UN General Assembly in September, and explained, “The transition to eco-friendly transportation is the most high-contributing solution in responding to climate change. South Korea is actively promoting the spread of smart mobility such as eco-friendly cars, autonomous vehicles, and intelligent transportation systems.”
President Yoon also said, “We need to continuously build green shipping routes to realize carbon neutrality on the sea,” and “South Korea will closely connect green ports in various places in the Asia-Pacific region, including South Korea and the United States, through eco-friendly shipping solutions.”

He also emphasized South Korea’s willingness to contribute to reducing the global climate gap. President Yoon said, “The $300 million contribution promised to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) this year can be seen as a solidarity will to support climate-vulnerable countries,” and “Our country will share climate response experiences and knowledge through the APEC Climate Center and support Asia-Pacific countries to have their own climate adaptation capabilities.”
President Yoon added, “Busan, where the APEC Climate Center is located, will serve as a gateway connecting the Asian continent and the Pacific, and will become a platform for solidarity and cooperation in seeking solutions to the climate crisis and other issues.”
Finally, President Yoon said, “In 1993, the APEC leaders who gathered for the first time proposed a vision of a sustainable growth and a safer future for the Asia-Pacific community,” and “Once again, we now have a historic responsibility and mission to respond to this vision from 30 years ago. Let’s unite and cooperate more strongly based on the spirit of community.”
