[Herald Economy=Reporter Koo Bon-hyuk] Nine faculty members from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) have been listed among the “top 1% of researchers worldwide” based on the number of citations of their papers. This is the second-largest number in South Korea, following Seoul National University.
Clarivate, an information analysis service company, revealed a list of 6,849 “Most Influential Researchers in the World 2023 (Highly Cited Researcher, HCR)” based on the number of citations of their papers.
A total of 65 researchers from Korean universities and research institutes were listed as HCR. Including multiple selections in multiple fields, 66 researchers were selected as HCR. Seoul National University produced the most HCRs with 10, followed by UNIST (9), and Sungkyunkwan University (8).
The UNIST researchers listed in the HCR are Professors Rodney Ruoff, Seoksang Il, Jae Phil Cho, Kwang Soo Kim, Jong Beom Baek, Hyunwook Lee, Seung Woo Cho, Changduk Yang, and Ho-Young Jung.
Professors Rodney Ruoff and Seoksang Il, who were selected as HCR in the field of materials science, are leading the world in the fields of graphene and perovskite solar cells, respectively. Professor Ruoff has been selected as an HCR for ten consecutive years since the announcement began in 2014, and Professor Seoksang Il has been selected for six consecutive years.

Professors Jae Phil Cho, Kwang Soo Kim, Jong Beom Baek, Hyunwook Lee, and Seung Woo Cho were selected as HCR in the Crossfield sector. The Crossfield area selects outstanding researchers who have significant influence in multiple fields, even if the number of citations in a single field does not reach the top 1%.
Professor Jae Phil Cho, an authority in the field of secondary battery materials in Korea, has been listed in the HCR for eight consecutive years. Professors Kwang Soo Kim and Jong Beom Baek, who have been selected as HCR for six consecutive years, are active in various fields such as chemistry and materials science. Professor Hyunwook Lee, a researcher in the field of real-time transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for secondary batteries, has been listed in the HCR for five consecutive years, and Professor Seung Woo Cho, an expert in the field of genetic scissors and other bioengineering, has been selected as HCR for three consecutive years.
Professors Changduk Yang and Ho-Young Jung have also been listed in the Crossfield HCR for two consecutive years. Professor Yang is an expert in the field of next-generation solar cells, including perovskite solar cells, and Professor Jung is a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) researcher with outstanding achievements in the field of materials science.
UNIST President Yonghoon Lee said, “Technologies that have revolutionarily changed the world, such as artificial intelligence and the internet, were born from research-oriented universities and their scholars,” adding, “UNIST, as a research-oriented university, will continue to establish a support system that allows researchers to focus on leading research.”
