The Dacha Culture in Russia

The Soviets distributed dachas to the people, which are more like weekend farms than villas
Despite the shortage of communist goods after the collapse of the Soviet Union, there was no massive famine
Every weekend, people would go to the suburbs to farm and store their harvest in preservation warehouses
Just like Koreans making kimchi, they gather together to make canned food and homemade ham in large quantities
There are numerous recipes for canned food and salted meat posted by Russians on YouTube
No matter how much the West sanctions us, there’s no risk of starving to death, as boasted on Russian broadcasts

Putin says, “Hardship makes Russians stronger.” This kind of absurd statement comes from such a context

When you watch documentaries, it seems that these dachas somewhat compensate for the cramped apartment-style houses in the city center. When you go to a dacha, it’s spacious and open, like a farm. You can feel the openness at the dacha, and then work in the city where there are infrastructures

Also, the former communist bloc surprisingly has excellent childcare infrastructure. Since the grandmother’s generation, the structure has been such that babies are left all day while parents work. There was an article suggesting that it might be better for children to make friends and develop cooperation in group life rather than being raised by parents like in Western Europe

Although Leninist communism, which caused a lot of trouble and eventually failed, becoming Stalinism, it was an ideological ideology that shook the world at one time. It had tremendous advantages, which is why people were attracted to it. Of course, what made this possible was the vast land that could feed the entire nation even in that cold country

We don’t know when a crisis will come to our country, but I feel like people have completely forgotten how to be self-sufficient

Because we live in a country where goods are overflowing (there aren’t many countries like Korea where goods are overflowing everywhere)

Everyone thinks too much that if you have “money,” you can buy everything. Even if you have a lot of “money,” they don’t realize that there might not be goods

I think it’s good to know at least the basic methods of self-sufficiency

I think it would be good to know at least the method of self-sufficiency
