President Yoon Seok-yeol made a proactive ‘Korea Sales’ pitch at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. He urged APEC to take the lead in overcoming the climate crisis and put forth the theme of ‘spread of carbon-free energy utilization,’ focusing on areas where Korean companies boast world-class knowledge and experience. He also pursued defense sales and securing core minerals through meetings with resource-rich nations.
On the 16th (local time), President Yoon said in the first meeting (Session 1) of the APEC summit held in San Francisco, USA, “I want to promote the transition to a clean energy system with APEC member countries,” and “I will take the lead in spreading the use of carbon-free energy.” In particular, President Yoon proposed, “Let’s establish and promote a special initiative to spread smart mobility across APEC member countries.”
President Yoon introduced, “Along with the expansion of clean energy use, the transition to eco-friendly means of transportation is the solution with the highest contribution to responding to climate change,” and “Korea is actively promoting the spread of smart mobility such as eco-friendly cars, autonomous driving cars, and intelligent transportation systems.” He also proposed carbon neutrality in the shipbuilding industry. Korea’s shipbuilding industry boasts world-class technology in next-generation low-carbon ships such as LNG ships. President Yoon emphasized, “We need to continuously build green shipping routes to realize carbon neutrality on the sea,” and “We will densely connect green ports in various parts of the Asia-Pacific region, including Korea and the United States, through eco-friendly shipping solutions.” Kim Tae-hyo, First Deputy Director of the National Security Office, explained, “We expect to help our economy by expanding overseas opportunities for our companies while sharing our knowledge and experience in smart mobility with APEC member countries.”

President Yoon also took steps to secure core minerals through bilateral meetings with resource-rich countries on the sidelines of APEC. He told Chilean President Gabriel Boric, “Korea, as a powerhouse in secondary batteries, hopes to build a core mineral partnership with Chile, the world’s largest lithium holder.” Chile has the largest lithium reserves in the world and is the second-largest importer of lithium to Korea after China. In addition, they agreed to deepen cooperation on global issues such as climate change while continuing negotiations to improve the Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which marks its 20th anniversary this year.
In a meeting with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, he made defense sales. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and Peru is scheduled to host the APEC summit next year, while Korea is scheduled to host in 2025. The summit meeting between the two countries is the first in eight years. President Yoon asked for Peru’s interest and support for our companies’ armored vehicles and FA-50 (light combat aircraft), which have proven their excellence, as the Peruvian government is known to be pushing for the introduction of wheeled armored vehicles and new fighter jets. President Yoon also expressed his hope to further expand mineral cooperation with Peru, which is rich in mineral resources such as copper, silver, and zinc. Peruvian President Boluarte said, “I hope that cooperation will also be promoted in the private sector.”
President Yoon had a 15-minute meeting with Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong, during which he proposed systematically promoting government and corporate exchanges to maintain the growth momentum of trade and investment in semiconductors and automobiles. They also agreed to expand support for youth exchanges.
