‘Realizing Camp David Principles’ 3 Major Proposals… “Significant Increase in Budget for Global Joint Research Next Year”
“Promoting Digital Governance Conforming to Liberal Democracy… Strengthening Collaboration for Carbon Reduction and Clean Energy”
(San Francisco= Yonhap News) Reporters An Yong-su and Jeong Ah-ran = President Yoon Seok-yeol announced three solidarity strategies on the 17th (local time) for the three countries, Korea, the United States, and Japan, to realize the ‘Camp David Principles and Spirit’ in the field of science and technology.
Previously, President Yoon, President Joe Biden of the United States, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan each adopted the Camp David Principles and Spirit, which contain the continuous guidelines and vision of Korea-US-Japan cooperation, last August.
At the Korea-Japan Summit held at the Hoover Research Institute at Stanford University in the United States, President Yoon revealed three solidarity proposals in the fields of ▲original and advanced industries ▲AI and digital ▲carbon reduction.
President Yoon first said, “The three countries of Korea, the United States, and Japan will immediately start discussions to discover and promote joint projects in the field of original advanced technology.”
President Yoon said, “For this, we plan to significantly increase the budget for global joint research support next year, and create a system that can respond to technological cooperation with countries that share our values at any time by flexibly executing the budget.”
President Yoon explained, “Original technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital and quantum science and technology, and 6th generation mobile communication (6G) are game changers that will change the future of mankind by triggering innovation in all industries and social systems.”
He continued, “By jointly developing technology and sharing the results with Korea, the United States, and Japan, who share philosophy and values, we can make the lives of not only the people of the three countries but also all mankind more free and affluent.”
He emphasized, “We will solidify cooperation in the field of original, advanced, and technology among the three countries of Korea, the United States, and Japan.”
President Yoon also stated, “The three countries of Korea, the United States, and Japan need to prevent AI and digital from oppressing human freedom and monopolizing human welfare.”
President Yoon pointed out, “Despite the benefits of generative AI led by Chat GPT in our lives, the situation is growing where fake news threatens democracy and freedom, or the serious digital divide harms human dignity.”
He emphasized, “When the three countries of Korea, the United States, and Japan join forces to lead these international discussions, we can properly create digital governance that conforms to the values of liberal democracy.”
He also added that the three countries of Korea, the United States, and Japan need to work together to guarantee digital access rights for countries with insufficient digital distribution and utilization, and to resolve the digital divide.
President Yoon went on to say, “Our three countries need to actively respond to the climate crisis by strengthening cooperation in carbon reduction and clean energy technology.”
President Yoon said, “In order to achieve carbon neutrality ahead of schedule, we need to widely utilize high-efficiency carbon-free energy such as nuclear power and hydrogen,” and mentioned the situation of cooperation between the three countries for the development of next-generation small module nuclear power plants, which officially launched last October.
President Yoon also said, “In the field of hydrogen, policy coordination between the three countries of Korea, the United States, and Japan is being strengthened centered on the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership,” and “I expect cooperation in clean energy in various areas such as technology development, systems, and infrastructure between the three countries.”
President Yoon added, “The leaders of Korea, the United States, and Japan declared in the Camp David Principles that the three countries are stronger when united,” and “I hope that you will enjoy the fruits of the new era that our three countries will open with solid solidarity and will, and challenge and grow to your heart’s content.”
