SEOUL, News1 – South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin held bilateral foreign ministers’ meetings with Canada and Mexico on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, USA, and exchanged views on substantive cooperation between the two countries and the global political situation.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Park met with Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly on the 15th (local time) and agreed to accelerate the implementation of follow-up measures after the summit meetings held in September last year and May this year.
Minister Park and Minister Joly also evaluated that both South Korea and Canada, as ‘North Pacific countries’, are continuing discussions on cooperation measures in the Indo-Pacific region through consultations at all levels. They also agreed to continue to develop cooperation in the North Pacific and Indo-Pacific in celebration of the first anniversary of each country’s announcement of its Indo-Pacific strategy.
The two sides also discussed the North Korean issue, the war in Ukraine, and the armed conflict between the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel in the Middle East.
In particular, Minister Park expressed his gratitude for the special interest and support shown by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the North Korean human rights issue through his speech to our National Assembly last May.
In response, Minister Joly said, “Canada agrees with the importance of resolving the Korean Peninsula issue and promoting human rights in North Korea,” and agreed to closely consult for the enhancement of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the future.

Minister Park also held a meeting with Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena Ibarra on the same day.
Minister Park said, “The trade volume has surpassed 20 billion dollars last year, and the trade relationship between the two countries is getting closer,” and asked for the interest and cooperation of the Mexican government on the resumption of negotiations for the South Korea-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the start of negotiations for South Korea’s accession to the Pacific Alliance as an associate member, and the conclusion of negotiations for the amendment of the South Korea-Mexico Investment Guarantee Agreement.
Minister Park also evaluated that our companies are participating in Mexico’s ‘Dos Bocas Refinery Project’.
In response, Minister Bárcena expressed hope that Korean companies with excellent technical skills and experience would participate in the construction of 10 industrial complexes and the ‘Pacific-Atlantic Canal’ project that Mexico is promoting, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Meanwhile, Minister Park had meetings with Nick Clegg, Head of Global Affairs at Meta, and Will Marshall, CEO of Planet Labs, representatives of leading companies in the field of artificial intelligence and space in the United States.
Minister Park also met with Ian Bremmer, Chairman of the Eurasia Group, and exchanged views on the enhancement of the Korea-US alliance, economic security and technology cooperation, and the strengthening of the Group of Seven (G7).
