(Seoul=News1) Reporter Kim Sung-sik = As the Israeli military, which had been conducting ground operations in the northern Gaza Strip with the aim of ousting the Palestinian armed faction Hamas, declared a southern offensive, airstrikes resumed in a central refugee camp and the southern city of Nuseirat, killing 15 people within a day.
The Palestinian state-run WAFA news agency reported on the morning of the 19th (local time) that 15 Palestinians were killed when Israeli fighter jets bombed residential areas in Nuseirat refugee camp and Khan Yunis.
According to the report, 13 civilians were killed in the Nuseirat refugee camp, and a total of two people, including women and children, lost their lives in Khan Yunis. In addition, several people were reported injured.
The population of Khan Yunis, the second largest city in the Gaza Strip, is estimated to be about 400,000, and tens of thousands of civilians who have left their homes in the north according to Israel’s evacuation instructions are also staying here.
On the previous morning, Israeli fighter jets also fired at residential buildings in Khan Yunis, killing 26 people and injuring 23, according to the Gaza Strip health authorities.
Israel has insisted that targeted airstrikes are inevitable as Hamas has been hiding military weapons and supplies in residential buildings, but Hamas has denied such claims as outrageous.
Earlier, the Israeli military declared a southern offensive in the Gaza Strip on the 17th and notified residents living in the east of Khan Yunis to move west.
As the Israel-Hamas war enters its seventh week, the cumulative death toll has increased to 12,300 as of the 18th. Among the 2.3 million population of the Gaza Strip, about two-thirds have become refugees.
