On November 20, the National Security Office held a National Security Council (NSC) Standing Committee meeting to review the readiness against North Korea’s military reconnaissance satellite launch.
At the standing committee meeting held this morning under the chairmanship of Director Cho Tae-yong, the trends of North Korea’s preparations for the launch of a reconnaissance satellite and the possibility of provocation during President Yoon Seok-yeol’s visit to the UK and France, as well as response measures, were discussed.
President Yoon is set to leave for a state visit to the UK and a local campaign for the 2030 Busan World Expo (Expo) in France.
The military authorities predict that North Korea may attempt a third launch of a military reconnaissance satellite as early as this week while President Yoon is abroad.
The NSC standing committee members have agreed to prepare for the possibility of North Korea’s provocations, such as the launch of a reconnaissance satellite or medium-to-long-range ballistic missiles.
They also plan to take necessary measures through cooperation with the US-Korea alliance, the US-Korea-Japan collaboration, and international society.
Moreover, the NSC standing committee members have decided to check the security readiness across the government and strengthen the defense posture to respond effectively and immediately to North Korea’s provocations.
They also agreed to make every effort to ensure there are no gaps in security during the president’s overseas tour.
The standing committee meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin, Minister of Unification Kim Young-ho, Minister of Defense Shin Won-sik, Director of the National Intelligence Service Kim Kyu-hyun, Chief Presidential Secretary for State Affairs Bang Ki-sun, NSC Secretary-General Kim Tae-hyo (1st Deputy Director of the Security Office), and Deputy Director of the Security Office In Seong-hwan.
